Paediatric Assessment

To evaluate your child’s hearing your audiologist may use a few types of assessment. This will be dependent on the age and development level of the child.

In addition to the methods listed below your audiologist may also use some complementary and alternative assessments.

Your audiologist will aim to complete the full battery of tests within 45 to 60 minutes depending on responses observed and test conditions. At every stage we endeavour to ensure both you and your child have a positive experience as we understand it can be a stressful situation for both of you.

Please note all appointments for children under 5 years of age are undertaken with two qualified and experienced paediatric audiologists.

A paediatric assessment is £250

Methods of Evaluation in Paediatric Assessment

Advice for parents / guardians

Visual Reinforcement Audiometry
VRA is used to assess hearing of children usually from 6-8 months up to 2 and a half years of age depending on the child's abilities and interest.
Conditioned Play Audiometry
CPA is used when evaluating children between the ages of 2 and a half and 5 years depending on their development level and interest.
Pure Tone Audiometry
PTA is used to assess hearing in teenagers and children over the age of five. A speech assessment may also be performed if clinically relevant.

Why might my child need a paediatric hearing assessment?

There are many reasons why your child may need a hearing test.

Our hearing is directly related to our cognitive abilities and even mild hearing loss can cause problems with speech, language, learning and social skills.

It is important that hearing loss is identified as early as possible before it can affect your child’s development.
